This course introduces the clay medium, its qualities and potential. Students will explore hand-built and wheel-thrown construction techniques, glazing, and surface decoration. Students will gain an understanding of the elements and principles of two-and-three-dimensional design as they solve problems in construction and decorating processes. After the basic techniques are mastered, students will be encouraged to explore the medium and their own creative potential. Students will develop aesthetic perceptions by using critical thinking skill, such as observation, discrimination, comparison, contrast, and imagination. Contemporary statements may be made through an understanding of the historical importance clay has played in past cultures. Students will be introduced to potential career opportunities and technological experiences. Students will maintain a portfolio that will include a journal, sketches, and other pertinent works of art.
