Advancement Via Individual Determination (AviD) 9 is an academicelective course designed for 9th grade students that prepares themfor college and career success. Students will work on academic andpersonal goals and communication, adjusting to the high schoolsetting. Students will increase their awareness of their personalcontributions to their learning as well as their involvement in theirschool and community. There is an emphasis on analytical writing,focusing on personal goals and thesis writing. Students will work incollaborative settings, learning how to participate in collegialdiscussions and use sources to support their ideas and opinions,while refining study skills and test-taking, note-taking, and researchtechniques. They will take an active role in field trips andguest-speaker presentations. Their college research will includefinancial topics and building their knowledge of colleges and careersof interest. This program is only available at Richland HS.
