Main Street Academy – Health Education

Students learn how to live healthy lifestyles and reduce risks for unhealthy behaviors. The curriculum covers personal health and wellness, mental and emotional health, safety and first aid, nutrition, disease prevention, and substance abuse (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs). Starting in grade 5, students receive human sexuality/HIV/AIDS education. In 6th grade, students learn about the human body, growth and puberty, sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS, prevention of STDs, and pregnancy with a focus on abstinence. In 7th grade, students learn functions of the male and female reproductive systems, STDs including HIV/AIDS, abuse, decision-making, and refusal skills. In 8th grade, students learn about dating, refusal skills, developing healthy relationships, prevention of STDs and unwanted pregnancy, and abstinence.
