This guide helps families understand available math paths and how each course connects to the next. Following the recommended sequence supports strong skill development, keeps students on track, and prepares them for future math success. ##### Middle School Math Updates for the 2026-27 School Year and Beyond A new Virginia law, House Bill 2686, was added to the [Code of Virginia](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/22.1-207.9/&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1771458942530796&usg=AOvVaw0nIJ1agxDFS4BFgU2iAolV). This law includes three important changes for students entering grades 6–8 and their families: 1. Students who score in the top 25% on the end-of-year math SOL test will automatically be placed in an advanced math class the next year. Parents may choose to opt out if they do not want their child placed in the advanced class. 2. Schools must offer more than one way for students to qualify for advanced math. This can include teacher recommendations, classwork performance, or other assignments that show a student is ready. 3. Families will receive information about math pathways every year. The list of available math classes can be found in the Program of Studies. ##### CCPS Middle School Math Pathways CCPS offers three pathways in middle school mathematics. Students have the opportunity to choose their courses each year based on their comfort and interest level. On-Grade Level Pathway Students in this pathway take math classes that match their grade level. They learn math at the pace suggested by the Standards of Learning. In this path, students typically take Math 6 in sixth grade, Math 7 in seventh grade, Math 8 in eighth grade, and Algebra I in ninth grade. There are opportunities for students to take Honors Math 7 in seventh grade and Algebra I in eighth grade. Students moving from Math 7 to Algebra I are required to take and pass a summer bridge course before enrolling in Algebra I. Honors Pathway Students in this pathway accelerate the learning of middle school content, learning more math content of multiple grade levels in a single year. In this path, students typically take Honors Math 6 in sixth grade, Honors Math 7 in seventh grade, and Algebra I in eighth grade. There are opportunities for students to move to the On-Grade Level Pathway in seventh grade and eighth grade; additionally, students could have the opportunity to take Algebra I in eighth grade. Two-Year Acceleration Pathway Students in this pathway must meet two-year acceleration criteria because they are learning two or more grade levels of content in a single year. In this path, students typically take Honors Math 7 in sixth grade, Algebra I in seventh grade, and Geometry in eighth grade. Students who begin in this pathway cannot move off of the pathway during middle school. ##### CCPS Specialty Centers As students begin considering speciality centers, the following specialty centers require students to have completed Algebra I prior to enrolling: - Clover Hill HS: Math and Science - Cosby HS: Governor’s Academy for Health Science - L.C. Bird HS: The Governor’s Academy for Engineering Studies - Meadowbrook HS: International Baccalaureate Programme - Midlothian HS: International Baccalaureate Programme - Monacan HS: Health Professions and Therapies Center As students begin considering speciality centers, the following specialty centers do not require students to have completed Algebra I prior to enrolling: - James River HS: Leadership and International Relations - Manchester HS: Mass Communications - Manchester HS: Spanish Immersion - Matoaca HS: Center for Innovative Technology - Meadowbrook HS: Meadowbrook Academy for Developing Entrepreneurs - Thomas Dale HS: Specialty Center for the Arts #### Regional High Schools The following Regional Governor’s Schools also require students to be enrolled in Algebra I or a higher-level math course during their eighth-grade year. (Students must also successfully pass the course for high school credit prior to enrollment.) - Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology - Maggie L.
