This course develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at the early intermediate level of English. Students will engage with a variety of authentic literature and informational texts. Teachers use scaffolded instruction including visuals, language supports, and partnership structures to develop oral and written language. Instruction incorporates meaningful and authentic opportunities for language use with increasingly complex grammatical structures and content-area vocabulary. Students develop oral language skills while interacting for a variety of purposes. Students develop their use of reading strategies and the writing process to access content in all academic areas. Skills and strategies developed are transferable and provide support for academic success in mainstream core content courses.

Prerequisites: Body of evidence that demonstrates Emerging and/or Progressing level of English language proficiency.
