Not only will students study the history of cinema from silent film to present day blockbusters, but also they will be required to examine various genres of film, directorial style, and cinematic techniques (editing, mise-en-scene, lighting, sound, etc). Students will analyze literary elements in film through extensive writing and in-depth discussions that include: Socratic seminars, critical reviews, thesis driven essays, and film analyses. Students will be expected to view, study, and write about film to enhance sharper perceptions and more profound appreciation of film. Viewing films outside of class will be required. This course is designed for students who want to seriously consider film as art that reflects social and historical conditions.
