This course is designed for students who are interested in investigating the physical and biological aspects of the marine environment. Physical features studied include the chemical composition of ocean water, tides, currents, waves up-welling, and the geophysical characteristics of ocean bottoms and shorelines. Biological aspects studied are the anatomy and physiology of marine organisms, major types of marine algae, representative examples of major groups of marine vertebrate and invertebrate animals, and tide pool life. Laboratory activities are conducted throughout the course. Laboratory investigations include sea water analysis, map-making, wave tank studies, and dissection of animals. Notes: Dissection may be a part of this course. Students may select an alternative assignment in lieu of actual dissection of an organism.
