This introductory course develops writing skills and prepares students to work on school publications and media staffs including newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, and television production. Students will develop news, sports, feature, and editorial writing skills. Emphasis is also given to interviewing, advertising, copy-reading and proofreading, headline writing, caption writing, layout and design. The student will also learn about First Amendment rights and responsibilities, journalism law and history. This course includes a study of modern newspapers, the history of journalism in the United States, newspaper organization, analysis of news, the effects of propaganda, and news gathering and writing. In the second semester, students focus upon a study of the physical makeup of a newspaper and the production of a cub edition.
