This is an introductory course on Mandarin Chinese with an emphasis on general communication skills. Students will be able to listen to and understand basic spoken Chinese, respond orally using core vocabulary, begin to recognize Chinese characters and learn how to use the pinyin system of writing and pronunciation. There will be a focus on grammar throughout the course that will include concepts such as simple clauses, adjectives, and formation of sentences. Lessons will include concepts such as greetings, introductions, nationalities, age, occupations, dates and time, numbers, days and months, hobbies, and expressions of likes and dislikes. The course will also include lessons that expand upon students knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture and history.

Prerequisites: CST Scores in the mid Basic range
