This course introduces the wood medium, it's qualities and potential. Students will gain an understanding of the art elements and principles of design, which will serve as a foundation for each unit of instruction. After the safe use of tools and basic techniques are mastered, students will utilize their own creative potential as they use wood as the art medium of choice. Students will develop aesthetic perceptions by using critical thinking skills, such as observation, discrimination, comparison, contrast, and imagination. Contemporary statements will be made through an understanding of the historical importance wood has played in past cultures. Students will maintain a portfolio that will include a journal, sketches, and photographs of completed works of art.
