Ethnic Studies: African American Studies introduces students to the history and cultural contributions of African Americans. This course Is designed to assist students in understanding Issues and events from multiple perspectives. It develops an understanding of the historical roots of African American culture, especially as it pertains to social, economic, and political Interactions within the broader context of United States history. It requires an analysis of Important Ideas, social and cultural values, beliefs, and traditions. Knowledge of the past provides citizens of the 21st century with a broader context within which to address the many issues facing the United States. LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH World Languages Following the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages guidelines, all World Languages courses are conducted mainly in the target language. Students who plan to register for any World Language course and are already proficient in the language, may take an exam to receive credit for the language, or advance to upper levels. The student may skip levels based on the outcomes of the exam. Leander ISD offers ACTFL exams to determine proficiency in more than 100 languages. Credit is awarded based on the proficiency level of the student. To register for the exam, please see your school counselor. The State Board of Education (SBOE) has approved specific computer sciences to substitute for World Language credits. Leander ISD offers the following approved World Languages substitution courses: Computer Science Principles AP (CTE), Computer Science I (CTE), Computer Science A AP (CTE), Computer Science III (CTE), Computer Science SL IB (CTE) and Computer Science HL IB (CTE). Students must complete two courses in Computer Science to satisfy the graduation requirement. Although computer science is a state approved World Languages substitution credit, not all colleges and universities accept computer science for admission purposes. Please see your school counselor for additional information concerning substitution options/requirements. American Sign Language Note: Although American Sign Language (ASL) is a state approved World Language elective credit, not all colleges and universities accept ASL for admission purposes. Some colleges/universities do not offer ASL, which means that students must change languages if a language
