Lake Washington High School – UW Astronomy 101 - The Stars
Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester
This course is an introduction to the universe, with an emphasis on conceptual rather than mathematical comprehension. Topics include the modern theories of the universe, evolution of galaxies, quasars, stars, black holes, planets and solar systems. Students will examine the electromagnetic spectrum, the Big Bang, the lives of stars, and the possibilities of other life in the universe. The content of the course is based on the book Death from the Skies!, authored by astronomer Phil Plait and will touch on ideas such as supernovae and black holes. Labs will mostly be models and simulations. One overnight field trip is planned for this course which requires additional fees. By taking this course, students taking AP Physics 1 instead of Physics in the Universe can access the space standards they would be missing. Enrolling in this course for college credit will automatically start a college transcript in that institution. CHS courses result as a grade on the student's high school and college academic record.
