The Advanced Placement course in United States History is designed to provide students with the analytic skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in U.S. History. The class prepares students for intermediate and advanced college courses. Students will learn to assess historical materials, their relevance to a given interpretive problem, their reliability, and their importance—and to weigh the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship. Advanced Placement United States History pushes students to develop the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions based on informed judgments and to present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay format. This course uses a college level text and requires extensive reading outside of class, writing skills, and that students use higher order thinking skills to synthesize the curriculum.
