John P. Stevens High School – Journalism and Media

This elective is an introductory course designed to teach the history and fundamentals of effective journalism. Students explore the process of journalistic writing from identifying a newsworthy story and credible sources, to gathering information and photos, to editing, layout, and publishing a variety of articles (ranging from news to opinion to sports). Students will hone skills in writing, interviewing, responsible reporting, critical thinking, audience awareness, evolving technology, collaboration, and communication. Additional units include social media, ethical reporting, journalistic vocabulary, and various publication modes.
