International Community School – Humanities 7
Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester
Humanities 7 combines English language and composition study with a thematic approach to literature. Students begin language study by learning parts of speech, verb forms and tenses, and patterns of phrases and clauses. They progress to descriptive paragraph writing with a focus on clear topic sentences, organization, specific details, varied sentence structure and strong word choice. Continuing paragraph writing, students explore the effects of the Neolithic Revolution. The ontogenetic metaphor as well as the monomyth (a pattern of loss, journey, test and return/resolution) and Japanese Internment are introduced. Various classic and Native American myths including Orpheus, Persephone and Raven are compared with modern short stories and longer works, including Anthem, Inherit the Wind, and Farewell to Manzanar.
