This course is designed to expose students to the intricate and fascinating world of William Shakespeare by exploring more than the simple “required” reading plays. The course focuses on fourteen of Shakespeare’s plays, almost all of which students have yet to or will not encounter in their regular English classes. In addition to the plays, students will also study Shakespeare’s sonnets and narrative poems, his biography, life and times in Elizabethan England, and the world of the theater. Field trips to see performances of Shakespeare or to visit the important Shakespearean sights nearby, are fun and exciting ways to learn about Shakespeare, and will be planned according to availability and timing. While the class does require a good deal of reading, the focus of the class will be on discussion. Each student will be required to have read the plays and be prepared to discuss them with the class and myself on the day they are due. In addition, students will be responsible for creating one major project that reflects what they have learned.
