Grant High School – American Sign Language 1-2

This is for students with no prior or minimal skill and knowledge of ASL. Itincludes the study of the history, structure, and grammar of ASL. ASL 1-2 also encompasses the studyof the historical and cultural contexts of the Deaf community. ASL is a visual, spatial, gesturallanguage that utilizes space and movement to convey meaning. You will develop communication skillsof which you are not accustomed to: using hands, face, body, eyes, and space. In order to progress, itis important that you become comfortable using body language and listening with your eyes. Toencourage and foster the development of ASL, spoken language (talking) will not be used during classfor some activities with the goal of no voicing by level 3-4.
