This course is intended only for students who’s native or first language is not English. The curriculum includes reading skills, vocabulary development, literature, composition, and the development of academic language. Class size and organization permit a highly individualized program. This course runs based on enrollment need and can be repeated. Class members will plan and produce the Grandview Chronicle. Students will be responsible for every aspect of the production of the online newspaper: investigative reporting, news and editorial writing, interviewing, editing, photography, layout and design, advertising design, and advertising sales. In addition to typing competency, editing and copy reading skills will be honored. Creating the newspaper will require time, not only during class, but also periodically after school, evenings, and/or weekends. Students are introduced to the variety of programs and occupations in audio/video technology, and communications and media systems. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to gather information that may be published in print or online media. Instruction will be paired with hands-on lab experiences in community reporting, both verbal and visual. In this class, students will learn the skills needed to plan, create and produce the Grandview yearbook, The View. They learn to conduct interviews, cover and photograph school-related events, write and edit copy, layout pages and meet deadlines. Members are expected to learn and practice responsible journalism. Meeting deadlines to create the yearbook often will require time, not only during class, but also after school, evenings, and/or weekends. This CTE-Aligned course allows for advanced work in the Digital Media & Communications Program of Study. This advanced work can be individualized to the specific program of study to allow for specialized study for the student. It may include project-based learning or preparation for end of program industry certification. Specific content and course design will be determined by the instructor in collaboration with the individual student.
