Language for Heritage Speakers of Spanish is a course designed for heritage speakers of Spanish who have demonstrated a certain level of oral proficiency. The purpose of this course is to enable Heritage Language Learners to increase proficiency and bi-literacy in Spanish by providing opportunities to improve reading and listening comprehension, as well as writing and grammar skills. Special attention will be given to grammar and vocabulary of the standard language, as well as the importance of biculturalism and bilingualism in the United States today. Upon successful completion of this course, students are recommended to continue in one of the following courses: Heritage Year 2, Spanish 4, Spanish 5, AP Spanish, or IB Spanish. (IDOE Course Title: Language for Heritage Speakers I) Language for Heritage Speakers of Spanish Year 2 (2192) Classification: Regular Prerequisite: Language for Spanish Heritage Speakers Year 1 Open to: 10, 11, 12 Credit: 2 RW Language for Heritage Speakers II builds upon Language for Heritage Speakers I. It is a course designed for heritage speakers of world languages who have demonstrated some degree of oral proficiency. The purpose of this course is to enable Heritage Language Learners to increase proficiency and bi-literacy in their native language by providing opportunities to improve reading and listening comprehension, as well as writing and grammar skills. Special attention will be given to grammar and vocabulary of the standard language, as well as to the importance of biculturalism and bilingualism in the United States today. The placement of students and the development of the course curriculum are dependent on the number of students enrolled in this course.
