Access courses are designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities to access the general curriculum. Students learn to demonstrate command of standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. They develop fluent and legible cursive writing skills and use knowledge of language when writing, speaking, reading, or listening. Students decode unfamiliar multisyllabic words and read with accuracy and fluency. The curriculum includes quoting accurately from texts, determining main ideas, summarizing, and explaining relationships between individuals, events, or ideas in historical and technical texts. Students analyze multiple accounts of the same event, integrate information from several texts, and analyze how visual elements contribute to meaning. They engage in collaborative discussions, present reports using multimedia components, and write opinion pieces, informative/explanatory texts, and narratives using the writing process and research skills.

Access courses are intended for students with significant cognitive disabilities and provide access to first-grade mathematics concepts. The foundational concepts of joining and separating quantities, patterns, shapes, and measures provide a means to organize the environment and predict outcomes of quantifiable events. Content includes whole numbers, combining and separating quantities, patterns, plane and solid figures, measurement, and solving routine and non-routine quantitative problems. Students learn to use numbers to keep accurate records of objects and events, understand the relationship between relative quantities, and apply numeric principles using concrete materials or traditional symbols to solve problems involving quantity and patterns.

Access courses provide students with significant cognitive disabilities access to second-grade mathematics concepts. The foundational concepts of joining and separating quantities, patterns, shapes, measurement, and time provide a means to organize our environment, sequence, and predict outcomes of quantifiable events. Students learn concepts including whole numbers, combining and separating quantities, patterns, plane and solid figures, measurement, time, money, and solving routine and non-routine quantitative problems.

Access courses provide students with significant cognitive disabilities access to third-grade mathematics. Students learn to understand and identify attributes of shapes such as quadrilaterals; partition shapes into equal areas; tell and write time to the nearest minute; solve word problems involving time, liquid volumes, and masses; draw and interpret scaled picture and bar graphs; measure lengths and area; and calculate perimeters. Students also develop skills in rounding whole numbers, performing multi-step addition and subtraction, multiplying one-digit numbers by multiples of 10, understanding fractions on number lines, identifying equivalent fractions, and interpreting products and quotients of whole numbers using the four operations to solve word problems and identify arithmetic patterns.

Access courses are designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities to access fourth-grade mathematics. Students learn to identify and draw points, lines, angles, and perpendicular/parallel lines; classify two-dimensional figures and identify symmetry; understand relative sizes of measurement units and apply area/perimeter formulas; create line plots to display fractional data; recognize and measure angles; understand place value for multi-digit whole numbers; fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; understand fraction equivalence, comparison, and operations; use decimal notation for fractions; solve multi-step word problems using the four operations; and generate or extend numerical and shape patterns.

Access courses provide students with significant cognitive disabilities access to fifth-grade mathematics. Students learn to use coordinate systems to graph points and solve real-world problems, and classify two-dimensional figures based on attributes using Venn diagrams. They convert standard measurement units and represent fractional data on line plots. Students explore the concept of volume using unit cubes and rectangular prisms. The curriculum includes place value understanding for decimals to the thousandths, rounding decimals, and performing operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with multi-digit whole numbers and decimals. Students also learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed numbers, evaluate numerical expressions using parentheses, and generate numerical patterns.
