Dougherty Valley High – Music Theory, AP

Prerequisite: Ability to read music and consent of the instructor. This course intends to provide the serious music student with a class equivalent to an undergraduate college level course in music theory and ear training. The ultimate goal of the AP Music Theory course is to develop the student’s ability to recognize, understand and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard in a score. The achievement of this goal may be best promoted by integrated approaches to the student’s development of: aural skills, sight singing skills, compositional skills, and analytical skills through listening exercises, performance exercises, written exercises, creative exercises and analytical exercises. As with all Advanced Placement courses, the grade is weighted and students are expected to take the Advanced Placement Exam.
