This course is designed to develop competencies related to the role and career path of an educator. Students will be introduced to characteristics of an effective educator, positive expectations, classroom organization, discipline techniques, and the professionalism of education. Students will develop skills in collaborative education and learning, leadership, and communication. Students will also examine human growth and development, including the fundamentals of the physical, cognitive, social, emotion, and moral development of children from conception through adolescence. Students will be exposed to essential theories and philosophies which will facilitate the further development and understanding of learning strategies and pedagogy. Students will create, maintain, and develop a teacher portfolio including all important and relevant documents related to their development as an educator. A work-based learning component is integrated into the course to provide an opportunity for students to observe the skills and knowledge of the education profession learned in class.
