The AP English Language and Composition course engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing.

The AP English Literature and Composition course engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected text, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to pro- vide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work s structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. Writing assignments focus on the critical analysis of literature and include expository, analyti- cal and argumentative essays.

AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational, literary, and philosophical texts; listening to and view- ing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students often have the opportunity to experience expository writing in the classroom but have little time to develop imaginative writing. Creative Writing will allow them to promote self-expression, to explore various writing styles, and to strive for variety in diction, sentence structure, and format through the study of poetry, nonfiction, fiction, and various artistic mediums such as film, to produce original works. We will explore the Hero’s Journey, memoir, science fiction, horror, and many more genres in our pursuit of better understanding the art of the story. Students will submit, produce, and present work consistently throughout the year in an effort to create an authentic environment of creative writing as an option for a career path or to bolster academic achievement.

English I is designed to help students continue the mastery of essential literacy skills. Emphasis is placed on developing strategies for effective speaking and listening, language and writing, and reading comprehension by listening to, reading, and analyzing a variety of complex texts.

Pre-AP English I focuses on reading, writing, and language skills that are relevant to students’ current work and essential for students' future to future high school and college coursework. Texts take center stage, preparing students for close, critical reading and analytical writing. The course trains readers to observe small details in a text to arrive at a deeper understanding of the whole. This course allows students to be data explorers in project-based units, through which they will develop their understanding of data analysis, sampling, correlation/causation, bias and uncertainty, probability, modeling with data, making and evaluating data-based arguments, the power of data in society, and more! This course is the foundation course for all higher mathematics courses. This course emphasizes linear and quadratic expressions, equations, and functions. Also, it introduces students to polynomial, rational, and exponential functions. Students explore the structure of and interpret functions and other mathematical models. Students enrolled in Algebra I are required to take the Algebra I EOC exam.

This course is the second of three courses in a series that uses a more integrated approach to cover the same algebra and geometry concepts and skills that are included in the traditional three course series. Major topics include Quadratic Functions & Equations, Nonlinear Functions & Equations, Congruence, Transformations, and Similarity. This course has a transcript equivalency to Geometry according to the state of Tennessee.

This course is the third of three courses in a series that uses a more integrated approach to cover the same algebra and geometry concepts and skills that are included in the traditional three course series. Major topics include Conditional Probability, Polynomial & Rational Equations, Exponentials, Logarithms, & Radical Functions, Trigonometry, Volume & Surface Area, and Circles. Pre-Calculus is designed to prepare students for college level STEM focused courses. Students extend their knowledge of the complex number system to use complex numbers in polynomial identities and equations. Environmental Science is a course that provides students with an opportunity to develop an understanding of interrelationships in the natural world. In addition, it allows them to identify natural and manmade environmental problems and design and evaluate possible solutions for these problems. It is the expectation that students will explore the content of Environmental Science through inquiry. This science course will utilize group lab and field experiences to meet these expectations. Particular emphasis will be placed on local environments. Students will develop a basic understanding of ecology as a basis for making ethical decisions and career choices.
