This California Partnership Academy program course engages students in examining the history, philosophy, structures, and functions of the American criminal justice system, including the juvenile justice system, how they interact in the administration of justice. Students also explore and analyze the three major components of the criminal justice system: police (including community-based approaches to policing), the courts, and corrections. Emphasis is also placed on constitutional issues related to criminal justice (primarily those arising under the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments) and on students acquiring and demonstrating knowledge and skills in legal research, legal reasoning, and legal advocacy. Students who complete this course with a grade of A, B or C (both semesters) and an A or B on the college end of course exam are eligible to earn up to 3 units of community college credit.
