This course examines how music, film, and other forms of popular media have reflected and shaped American life over the past century. Students will study the development of popular music, from early blues and jazz to rock, hip-hop, and contemporary styles, and explore how these genres connect to broader social and cultural changes. The course also considers the role of film, television, and digital media in expressing national values and influencing public attitudes. Through analysis, discussion, and creative projects, students will gain a deeper understanding of how popular culture both mirrors and molds the American experience. This course will trace major events since World War II, including: the Cold War, the civil rights movement, Korean and Vietnam Wars, and Watergate. Students will engage in critical discussions, analyze primary and secondary sources, and participate in projects that encourage them to connect historical events to contemporary issues in sports.
