Coronado High School – Symphonic Orchestra 1,2

Symphonic Orchestra is the intermediate level orchestra at Coronado High School and is open to all students who play orchestral stringed instruments in grades 9-12. Students must have played on their stringed instrument for at least two years in order to take this course. Students are expected to practice at home and come to rehearsals prepared to put the music together with others. Students are encouraged to take private lessons, especially if they plan to audition for Chamber Orchestra for the following year. The Symphonic Orchestra gives at least four public performances including a Fall Concert, a Holiday Concert, a Winter Concert, and a Spring Pops Concert. Attendance at scheduled performances is required and is part of the student's grade. Often the Symphonic Orchestra also performs at graduation and at music festivals outside of school. Occasionally students will be required to attend rehearsals outside of the normal school day, either before or after school. Depending on the year, the Symphonic Orchestra may go on a performance tour out of state. Purchase of a performance outfit is required. Students must audition to be enrolled in this class. This band is a training group to prepare students with skills necessary to participate in Wind Ensemble. Literature is geared to the members' abilities with emphasis being placed on improvement of tone quality and technical proficiency. There are opportunities for students to excel in this band and move into Wind Ensemble. Attendance at scheduled performances is required and is considered part of the student's grade. This band participates at local and regional band contests and festivals and is also part of the Pep Band which performs at home football games and some basketball games.
