Coronado High School – Constitutional & Criminal Law
Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester
Constitutional and Criminal Law is an engaging, real-world exploration of how the law affects our daily lives. We will learn about the American legal system. First, we will look at how and why laws are made and the influence of federalism and the structure of government on the U.S.’ legal systems. This course introduces students to key principles of constitutional law and criminal law, helping students understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Students will examine landmark Supreme Court cases, analyze current legal issues, and explore topics such as freedom of speech, due process, equal protection, and privacy rights. In the criminal law portion of the course, students will learn how the justice system works from investigation through trial and sentencing. They will study crimes and defenses, police procedure, and the rights of the accused, often through case studies, mock trials, and classroom debates. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply legal reasoning to real-life situations, think critically about justice and fairness, and gain practical knowledge about how the American legal system protects individual rights and maintains public order.
