The purpose of this course is to engage students with the great poems, plays, and novels of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon through the Romantic periods. By studying these great works of the English language, students develop an imaginative love of their own language and an attention to its particularities and terrain. Students will develop skills of close reading, analyzing these works for form (literary conventions) and content (ideas and themes). This course aims to form polite and attentive high-level readers who love literature and are able to respond to it with elevated thought, respectful discussion, and eloquent writing.
