Major Outcomes: Students will practice a skills based approach to build on their prior knowledge of the Health Education Standards including comprehending concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention by demonstrating the ability to: Analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behavior; Use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks; Use decision-making skills to enhance health; Use goal-setting skills to help health. This class will support the development of health education skills and acquisition of knowledge they need now, and will need in the future to maintain or enhance their health and fitness. Projects, Activities, etc.: Students will participate in healthy lifestyle practices including classroom and physical activity. They will explore how to incorporate technology into a well-rounded healthy life, the benefits of mentors, and self-help books to promote the development of the health triangle. (Physical, Mental and Social Health) They will also learn to create a plan for their future and anticipate obstacles. Finally, students will create an in-depth health plan that takes into account all aspects of a quality fitness plan. Instructional Focus: Skills based activities, fitness practice, health & wellness field trips, guest speakers, research and advocacy projects, community school partnerships including peer teaching, and hands-on activities.
