In Astronomy, students conduct field and laboratory investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem-solving. Students study the following topics: information about the universe; scientific theories of the evolution of the universe; characteristics and the life cycle of stars; exploration of the universe; role of the Sun in our solar system; planets; and the orientation and placement of the Earth. # 3901H/3902H Engineering Beyond Earth: A Practicum in Aerospace, Satellites, and Space Structures (Honors/GT) Credit: 2 credits (state) GPA Level 1 Grade Level(s): 11-12 Course Code: 03060300/03060310 Abbreviation: STSCI/STSCI2 Prerequisite(s): Algebra II, Physics I, and one of the following: Aerospace Engineering or Engineering Science. Eligible for Fall Exam Exemptions: No Location: CLHS or CBHS, dependent on student interest This advanced practicum course immerses students in the study and application of Aerospace Engineering with a focus on systems and structures used in space. Students will explore spacecraft, high altitude satellite design, launches/data collection, and the challenges of manufacturing and constructing structures in outer space environments. Using a team-based engineering design model with a focus on technical communications, each student will participate in hands-on projects and guided research. Students will need their own transportation for this course because class meetings will be held in different locations connected to aerospace/engineering across the community. Juniors who participate in this course will work towards receiving the Texas Aerospace Scholar Designation.
