Clear Brook High School – 7507 Patient Care Technician

This course provides the knowledge and skills necessary for certification as a Patient Care Technician through the National Healthcare Association. Students learn and practice clinical skills frequently used in the medical and health care industry. Students will prepare for entry level positions that support daily functions and operations of hospital patient care units. Topics of study include basic patient care, distribution of supplies, phlebotomy procedures, EKG readings, and vital sign monitoring. This course culminates in a certification as a Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A). This course studies disease processes and how human systems are affected. Emphasis is placed on prevention and treatment of diseases. The course begins with the basics of cellular biology, cancer, the infection process, and the immune system. A focus on specific body systems and common disorders will be covered. Students will differentiate between normal and abnormal physiology. The course will include at least $40 %$ laboratory investigation and fieldwork using appropriate scientific inquiry.
