Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies is a yearlong Social Studies elective. The interdisciplinary course reaches into a variety of fields—literature, art, music, geography, politics, and pop culture—to explore the vital contributions and experiences of African Americans. The history of African Americans is traced from their African diaspora all the way up to the modern day. Units of study will include early African empires, slavery and resistance, Reconstruction and the practice of freedom, the civil rights movement, and contemporary issues. Students will study topics ranging from the significance of Marvel Studios' Black Panther to King Mansa Musa of Mali to the Harlem Renaissance to today's diversity within Black communities. Students will earn 7 Honors points for this course and have the opportunity to take the AP exam at the end of the year, which may earn them college credit.
