Centennial High School – Music Theory AP

This course is designed for music students who are interested in pursuing a career in music and/or majoring in music. The course will include the study of music vocabulary, chord structure, key signatures, harmony, complex rhythms and other music reading skills in preparation for college music theory. This music theory course will also emphasize the students’ development in the areas of sight singing and ear training. Students will be learning skills that are taught at a college freshman level of music theory. It is strongly recommended that students have a basic understanding of traditional music notation in treble and bass clef before beginning this course. Knowledge of major scales and key signatures is preferred. The scope of the course follows the topics listed in the College Board Advanced Placement Course Description. Successful completion of this course will prepare students to take the AP exam with the possibility of earning college credit.
