This course requires students to synthesize the leadership information they acquired during their first three years in the center. Students review leadership principles, identify skill sets that contribute to individual career paths, execute their knowledge through an externship or internship and research, create and implement a service learning Capstone Project. (Prerequisite: LS171H, [CODE for IR course], and TR921H) The Governor’s Academy for Engineering Studies at Lloyd C. Bird High School offers a rigorous curriculum that integrates core math and science with specialized engineering electives. The program emphasizes college and career readiness by developing critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration skills. Students engage in hands-on, project-based learning that allows them to apply engineering concepts to real-world challenges, and they also participate in field trips and extracurricular activities to explore engineering in action. In addition, students are required to complete service hours through community service, school involvement, and/or work-based learning, and are supported both academically and socially through tutoring, mentoring, and community-building events. This specialty center requires students to have taken and passed Algebra I before entering ninth grade. Center Objectives A unified study of fundamental concepts basic to all engineering fields. Extensive use of technology within the classroom including computer-assisted drawing and other software used in the university setting A focus on hands-on projects with emphasis on project-management, problem-solving, critical-thinking and collaboration Enhanced communication skills through written and oral reports. A comprehensive high school curriculum with access to advanced levels of all courses, including dual enrollment and Advanced Placement. Center Outcomes
