Have you ever heard someone say something you thought was irrational… but you couldn’t explain why it was irrational? Logic & Reasoning will help you identify faulty reasoning and then correct it. In particular, students learn informal logical fallacies, informal (natural language) logic and formal (symbolic) logic. As a practical matter, while we do not know what careers will be in demand in upcoming decades, those candidates with strong analytical and verbal reasoning skills should excel when faced with diverse challenges. Logic & Reasoning can help, in sharpening students’ critical-thinking skills. Specifically, the course units that examine arguments in English will prepare students for presentations, debates, policy analysis, and the like; learning the structures in everyday reasoning makes writing essays easier, as well. The symbolic logic units prove the underlying logic used in mathematics, computers, and other STEM applications. The symbolic logic unit also prepares students for introductory logic courses that apply toward students’ “quantitative reasoning” credit at more than one-third of Michigan’s public universities. Decades after taking the class, former students have reported that they continue to the skills learned Logic & Reasoning in their lives. Qualifies for Applied Math credit.
