This course emphasizes advanced skills obtained in a variety of health care facilities under the supervision of an instructor. Communication and interpersonal skills, infection-control, safety and emergency procedures, recognition of changes in body functioning, personal care needs of both the long-term care and acute care patient are studied. The legal aspects of practice as a certified nurse aide and occupational health and safety measures are also included. Students will be required to purchase a scrub uniform, white shoes without a logo, and a watch with a second hand. The instructor will provide a description and cost of the scrub uniform during the first week of class. Local healthcare facilities will be utilized for clinical experience. As part of the clinical affiliation agreements, students may be required to obtain a Tuberculosis screening (PPD), a urine drug screening, a flu vaccine, and a COVID-19 vaccine. All screenings and vaccines (except COVID-19) must be dated after August of the school year they are entering. The required screenings and vaccines for each clinical facility will be announced in the first month of class and are required prior to the clinical experience. This course is approved by the State Board of Nursing and will qualify the student for participation in the Virginia Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Program (required for certification). Transportation to the clinical sites is provided.
