Bard High School Early College – LIT 123: Poetry Workshop

As a poetry workshop and reading seminar, this class assumes that itsmembers have a fundamental understanding of the practice of poetry, orintrinsic interest in the subject matter. The purpose of the course will bemultifaceted as a study of poets, poems, and the act of writing andrevising poetry. There will be a literary focus on contemporary Americanpoetry narrowed around a few authors, but drawing from the works fromthe 1950's to the present. We will explore the collective dialogue in agroup setting of how to make a poem, revise that work, and how toconsider a poem as it stands alone and within the contextual perspectiveof the world at the time it is written.
