Bard High School Early College – ART 108: Art of Portraiture

This course provides an overview of practical approaches towarddepicting the human portrait via an array of drawing techniques. Studentswill be acclimated to surface anatomy, proportion, composition, withother aspects of portraiture including narrative/sentiment, and caricature.Students will develop the skills necessary to create finished/refinedportrait drawings. Coursework will be informed by lectures that detailhistorical aspects of portrait drawing as well as contemporary practices inthe genre. Students will work primarily with graphite and ink. As artistshave done throughout the course of history, students will utilize theiracquired knowledge to create portraits that reflect both the uniquecharacteristics of their subjects, and the artist's world view.
