Hi, I'm Michael! I'm currently a student at Harvard University studying physics and archaeology. While physics and archaeology seem quite different, on a fundamental level both fields involve solving puzzles. This is why I love tutoring in physics, math, and Latin, all of which are topics embedded with puzzles. I'll begin with physics and math. I have tutored a number of students who believe that they are simply unable to understand the material at a high level. However, I truly believe that with proper instruction every student is capable of understanding physics and math in an intuitive and interesting way. You are given a set of rules, and students must think nimbly to apply those rules to the situation at hand. In the end, a question that seems dull at first becomes an interesting puzzle to figure out. I believe that physics and math provide a language to understand our universe and Latin provides the basis for our own language. I hope to impart on my students how much fun it can be to solve puzzles in those three subjects and to use those solutions to understand the world around us.While I hope I have communicated above my love of physics, math, and Latin and my love for teaching those subjects, it's also important to know my qualifications in those topics. I'm planning on majoring in physics and have so far taken courses in classical mechanics, electrodynamics, and quantum mechanics. Regarding math, while I have studied multivariable calculus and theoretical linear algebra in structured class environments, I have also learned to apply this math through my physics courses. As for Latin, I have taken four years of language classes in high school and have continued my study of the language in college having taken courses in Latin literature and Roman history.Then there's music. I've been playing violin for the past 15 years and the viola for the past 5. I spent three summers at the Indiana University Summer String Academy, culminating in winning first place in their annual string quartet competition during my last summer there. I have played solo and chamber music, and I played in an orchestra for four years, serving as principal second violin, principal viola, and associate concertmaster (not all at the same, though). I even played in a pit orchestra for four years.Outside of the classroom and practice room, I love doing stand-up comedy, I've dabbled in creative writing, and during the summers I work as a sailing instructor at a summer camp.

I am a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a focus on Acting. While I teach a range of subjects, my favorites to teach are English, Hebrew, Literature, and Theatre.I was a full-time teacher for two years in Israel, in which I taught Civics and English in an accredited GED program through the Ministry of Education. While teaching in this GED program, I tutored each of my students in addition to classroom hours. As a tutor-student team, we found creative approaches to the material that would cater to each of their unique needs as a learner. During my travels in Nepal, I worked with the NGO Nyayik Sansar, and taught English classes to a group of Nepali women who were starting their own ginger farming business. I also had the unique privilege of teaching English as a second language in the Skaramagas refugee camp, to children, teens, and adults seeking asylum from Kurdistan, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran.I also have five years of experience teaching Hebrew as a second language, and have taught all levels of Hebrew in public high schools, two-month-long language immersion programs, as well as synagogues. I've found that when learning a second language, the best way to learn is through Comprehensible Input, which means jumping into speaking the language as much as possible through using high frequency words and phrases. I am also a professional actor in Chicago, and while earning my BFA in Theatre, I studied script analysis, design, performance and theatre history. I absolutely love to teach Shakespeare, and I have years of experience performing and bringing his texts to life in an understandable and entertaining way, so let's dive right in!In my spare time, I love playing guitar and mandolin, hiking, biking, and baking sourdough bread. To this day, I credit many of my biggest academic achievements to the tutors that have helped me along my journey. My desire to become a tutor began after a tutor of mine personally changed by life. The general perception people have of tutors is that they are just intelligent individuals with expertise in certain areas who lecture those who do not fully understand yet. In my case, my tutor helped shape the way I see tutoring and learning itself. When I was younger I personally struggled with many subjects. My tutor was very patient with me and followed my pace and asked questions that would improve my critical thinking. Most importantly, however, she never got frustrated with me no matter how many times I had to go through certain concepts. These characteristics she exhibited has guided me to develop my tutoring philosophy Learn first, teach after."Tutoring has been a significant part of my life since I started high school. I began tutoring right away in the 9th grade to help others understand and gain valuable experience. As I moved closer to senior year I began tutoring nearly every subject to become a more holistic tutor. Senior year arrived and I was thrilled for two reasons college applications and having the opportunity to tutor all grade levels in various areas of academia. Senior year was amazing and I was blessed with being the only student who had over 100 tutoring sessions that year. I credit this success to my tutoring style, which involves asking the right questions and putting myself in the tutees state of mind and never being afraid of going slower to help the individual learn. Tutoring is not about teaching what you know it is about guiding someone through a learning experience.
