I first came to tutoring through helping my friends and acquaintances with their studies in math and physics courses during my first year at the University of Chicago. I continued tutoring throughout college. After some time, I discovered that I truly enjoy it when I am able to help a student understand a concept that they were struggling with. When I graduated, I found that I missed teaching, so I started with Varsity Tutors.I studied physics during my time at the University of Chicago. The curriculum covered many different areas of study within the field of physics, including: Special and General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Classical Mechanics (Hamiltonian and Newtonian), etc. Furthermore, my studies required me to learn advanced mathematics including analysis, linear algebra, topology, and abstract algebra. My passion for physics and math only grew deeper during my time at college, and I want to impart this same passion to my students. If I can't do that, I hope that I can get them to think math and physics can at least be pretty cool!I have also been working with many students on ACT and SAT prep, as well as preparation for various AP tests covering math and science during my time tutoring. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy playing and writing music (I play guitar and piano, as well as singing). I also like board games, including go, chess, Settlers of Catan etc.

ACT Prep Tutor • +47 Subjects

I am a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University with a BA in Theatre Arts, specializing in Performance and Playwriting. I have a long history of both professional and informal tutoring, including a year working as an ACT classroom instructor with Kaplan Test Prep, six months tutoring both the ACT and academic subjects with StudyPoint, and three years tutoring college-level writing. As my major suggests, I am enthusiastic about all the performing arts, including both on- and offstage areas. I also have extensive experience teaching (and practicing!) creative endeavors from poetry and fiction writing to music composition and performance. Just don't ask me to draw any hands! Despite my professional focus on liberal arts, I also have a keen amateur interest in science, primarily in physics (A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking was my introduction) but also in chemistry, biology, psychology, and sociology. My teaching style is based upon the premise that knowing how to think is much more useful than knowing what to think. My sessions are characterized by frequent questions and discussion of basic concepts, making sure that each student understands not just the "what" but the "why" of each topic so that each new concept builds on the last. I strives to foster independence and a love of learning in all of my students, beginning with myself; it's always easier to remember concepts that were fun to learn!

I enjoy working with students of all ages on various subjects. I have previously tutored students from pre-K to college age in subjects ranging from pre-reading/phonics skills, language arts, basic Spanish and study skills to high level math and college test prep.I have a bachelor's in elementary education with endorsements in early childhood and reading and a minor in general business. I have taught eight grade, fourth grade, kindergarten and pre-school. My favorite part about teaching is watching those "aha" moments as students grasp a new or difficult concept for the first time. I enjoy working with students one-on-one to find what works best for each student to help them learn in the way that most benefits and makes sense to that student.I look forward to the opportunity to tutor all students in many subjects and share my strengths with others.
