Understanding Author's Purpose

Why Did the Author Write This?

Every author writes for a reason. It could be to inform (teach you something), to entertain (make you laugh or feel happy), or to persuade (convince you to think or do something).

How to Figure Out the Author’s Purpose

  • Notice the tone: Is it funny, serious, or trying to teach?
  • Look for facts, opinions, or funny stories.
  • Ask, "What does the author want me to learn or feel?"

Why is This Important?

Knowing the author’s purpose helps you understand the story and its message.

Examples

  • A book that teaches you about recycling is written to inform.

  • A funny story about a silly cat is written to entertain.
