Understanding Stories

What Makes a Story?

Stories are made up of characters, settings, and events. When you read a story, you meet new people (characters), explore places (settings), and follow along as things happen (events).

How to Follow a Story

Reading a story means paying attention to the order of events. What happened first? What happened next? Sometimes, stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Why is This Important?

Understanding stories helps us make sense of what we read and enjoy it more! We can talk about the story with friends and even act it out.

Tips for Enjoying Stories

  • Look at the pictures for clues.
  • Ask questions like, "Who is in the story?" or "Where does it happen?"
  • Retell the story in your own words.

Examples

  • A story about a lost dog who finds his way home.

  • Reading about a magical forest and the animals that live there.
