Making Predictions

Guess What Happens Next

Making predictions is using clues from the story and what you already know to guess what might happen next.

How to Make Predictions

  • Look at the title and pictures before you read.
  • Think about what has already happened in the story.
  • Ask yourself, "What do I think will happen next?"

Checking Predictions

As you read, see if your guess was right. It’s okay if you were wrong—you can make a new prediction!

Why Predict?

Predicting keeps your brain active and makes reading more exciting.

Examples

  • Seeing a dog hide his bone and guessing he will dig it up later.

  • Reading that it’s cloudy and guessing it might rain in the story.
