Checking for Reasonableness

Make Sure Your Answers Make Sense

After solving a problem, always ask: does this answer seem right? Estimating before and after solving helps catch silly mistakes.

How to Check

  • Round numbers to make a quick estimate.
  • Compare your answer to your estimate.
  • If your answer is way off, try the problem again!

Examples

  • Estimate 199 + 202 as about 400, so the exact answer should be close.

  • Check if your answer for a measurement is bigger or smaller than the objects involved.
