Advanced Topics
In a nutshell: Learn to handle numbers that aren't whole.
## Working with Decimals and Fractions
Decimals and fractions are ways to show parts of a whole. Decimals use a dot, and fractions use a bar.
### Comparing Decimals and Fractions
To compare them, you can turn a fraction into a decimal by dividing the top by the bottom.
- \( \frac{1}{2} = 0.5 \)
- \( \frac{3}{4} = 0.75 \)
### Adding and Subtracting
- Line up decimals by the dot and add or subtract as usual.
- For fractions, make sure they have the same bottom number (denominator) before adding or subtracting.
### Real-World Use
You see decimals and fractions when dealing with money, measurements, and sports scores!
Examples
- Add 2.35 + 1.6 by lining up the decimal points.
- Subtract \( \frac{3}{4} - \frac{1}{4} = \frac{2}{4} = \frac{1}{2} \).
