Multiplying and Dividing Bigger Numbers
Working with Larger Numbers
Once you're good with small numbers, you can use the same ideas for bigger numbers! Multiplying and dividing two-digit numbers is like using your basic facts, but with more steps.
Strategies for Bigger Numbers
- Break Apart Numbers: Use what you know, like \(12 \times 3 = (10 \times 3) + (2 \times 3)\).
- Use Place Value: Multiply or divide tens and ones separately, then add the results.
- Estimate: Round numbers to make math easier, then adjust your answer.
Practice and Patience
It's okay if it takes a little longer! Keep practicing and you'll get faster and more accurate.
Examples
Multiply 14 × 3 by splitting: (10 × 3) + (4 × 3) = 30 + 12 = 42.
Divide 36 ÷ 6 by thinking: 6 times what equals 36? It's 6.
In a Nutshell
You can multiply and divide bigger numbers using the same strategies as small numbers.
