3rd Grade Math

Multiplication, division, and more complex problem-solving strategies for third grade students.

Basic Concepts

Introduction to Division

What Is Division?

Division is splitting a number into equal parts. It's the opposite of multiplication. If you have 12 cookies and want to share them with 4 friends, you divide the cookies so everyone gets the same amount.

How Division Works

The number being divided is the "dividend." The number you divide by is the "divisor." The answer is called the "quotient."

You can write it as \(12 \div 4 = 3\).

Ways to Visualize Division

  • Sharing: Divide objects into equal groups.
  • Grouping: See how many groups you can make.
  • Using Arrays: Flip a multiplication array to show division.

Division in Everyday Life

Division helps you share, split, and organize things fairly!

Examples

  • 18 candies are shared among 6 kids. Each kid gets \(18 \div 6 = 3\) candies.

  • 24 pencils are divided into packs of 8. You make \(24 \div 8 = 3\) packs.

In a Nutshell

Division is breaking things into equal parts or groups.
