My name is Halle Dirks. I'm a junior at the University of Arizona majoring in Creative Writing and Japanese, and I am quite passionate about both of those subjects. To me, passion is what makes a life worth living -- if someone doesn't do what makes them happy, it makes for a rather dull existence.Let's see...I've been an honors student for my entire life, it seems, so I think I end up striving for heights others may not. Still, I don't think I'm some fire-breathing strict ruler-toting tutor or anything like that, so no worries on that score. I want to see students pursue what makes them happy, and if what makes them happy happens to align with the subjects I adore, I think we'll get along grand.Slight personal details about me, I'm what one might call a "mystery geek," and I consider myself to be an amateur Sherlockian. I watch anime -- besides simply enjoying the medium, it makes for surprisingly good Japanese listening pracitce -- play video games, write when the fancy strikes, knit, make paper figurines...really, I have an eclectic assortment of hobbies. I'm also a part of the newly-minted UofA Creative Writing Club, and most weekends I get together with friends and play Betrayal at House on the Hill. I'm more of the introverted sort, but perhaps you could tell that by everything else you've just read?I suppose I'm digressing at this point. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for visiting my profile! I wish you the best in your future endeavors, whether or not they include me.

I received my PhD in Physics and taught both university undergraduate, graduate courses in Physics, supervised thesis MS/PhD students, as lecturer and assistant professor (ref 1). The Physics subjects I taught use extensively geometry, trigonometry, algebra, calculus and differential equations (ref 2). I was also a Math and Physics teacher for algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and introduction to physics to a group of high/middle-school children at a local language and cultural education school. I had my background check on file with Kyrene School District when I was a badminton assistant coach (volunteer) in one of the well known high schools in the area.I love to share with people the importance and correct use of Math and Physics for learning or real-life applications, My goal is to help people master Math and Physics from principle to applications as their needs require. I am fluent in English (professional) and Mandarin (native). From my 25+ years in universities and major companies in the industry (as engineer, software developer, team manager), I worked extensively, face-to-face, with people and groups of diversified culture and professional background in roles from teaching, training for 1:1 or large audience, customer support world wide, product demonstration and publication presentations at leading industrial conferences. As well recognized by my students (5 star ratings on all sessions), I tailor my teaching to student's need, resources, priority on the concept or problem solving or both. I am detail minded, interactive, and flexible in working with students ranging from high/middle-school to college/university ages. I pay close attention to student's needs, learning progress, and make necessary adjustments to achieve best results.Thank you for the potential opportunities to work with you and help you make significant improvements on learning the concept and achieving efficient and accurate real-life problem solving in the wonderful world of Math and Physics. I look forward to the rewarding experience of working with my student clients to achieve these goals: true understanding of the subject, able to articulate the concepts learned, efficient and accurate in problem solving, better grades and standing in the class, and/or better performance at work.References1. Fear brimmed in my mother's eyes as she whispered intently with my father in the corner of our kitchen. I was a senior in high school. My 8-year-old sister, Lizzie, had been unquenchably thirsty, urinating frequently, and her normally bubbly personality had dimmed dramatically. The symptoms were clear signs to my father, a trained anesthesiologist. After taking her to the hospital, my parents' fears became a reality. As Dad had suspected, Lizzie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This day marked the beginning of a life-long trial for my sister, and is a day I will always remember. Seeing the training my father received in medical school come to life in our own family in the care of my sister was a pivotal experience for me. I saw a purpose to life that I hadn't seen before - serving others in moments that matter, in ways they cannot help themselves. From this day forward, I have thirsted to fulfill this purpose in my own life. My compassion for those in need, coupled with my desire for meaning is what sparked my unchanging ambition in pursuing a career in medicine. While many experiences have played a role in confirming my desire to become a doctor, perhaps the most pivotal moment came one afternoon in the damp heat of the Dominican Republic. In a small village tucked high in the mountains, surrounded by jungle foliage on the banks of a river, we located the palm-frond ramada where we were to settle our mobile clinic for the day. As patients arrived, I assisted the doctors in providing wound treatment, medication, advice, and a listening ear. Around mid-day, a patient named Elisa hobbled slowly into the clinic. A woman in her early fifties, Elisa had worked from sunup to sundown for most of her life. Upon conversing with her, I learned that weeks prior, Elisa had punctured the sole of her foot as she worked. Unable to afford time away from her duties, she endured the pain as she worked each day. Over time, the wound grew wider and deeper as infection intensified in the tissues, with no proper cleaning or covering. Upon observing her condition, the doctor informed us that the wound was greatly infected, deep, and needed immediate attention. As the doctor informed her of his need to clean out her wound with tools, Elisa's face became blank with fear. Noting her anxiety, his assistant and I took her hands and reassured her that everything would be well. As the doctor treated the wound, removing the infected tissue and fluid, Elisa grimaced with pain and clung tightly to our hands. After her wound had been dressed, she was given an antibiotic and invited to rest her foot before returning home. Before we could move to prepare a place for her to rest, she quickly embraced the volunteer and me who had "endured" with her, thanking us with tears in her eyes and words of gratitude pouring from her heart. The pain of the wound was not just physical pain. For Elisa, her wound brought with it grief and worry, in that she feared she would be unable to work if her foot did not soon heal. As I conversed with patients like Elisa that day regarding their difficulties, I realized that we were not just providing treatment to patients. While our clinic offered much-needed medical attention, more importantly, it offered a symbol of hope for this small community. This hope is what I seek to emulate as a doctor.

I have always loved math so when I went to college, a degree in engineering seemed like the perfect choice. After college I worked in the aerospace industry for 10 years as a systems engineer on several satellite programs. Although I enjoyed my job, I wanted to spend more time with my family. It was then that I discovered I absolutely love working with students. I became a part-time math teacher in a small private school, teaching everything from Algebra II to Calculus III. I love showing students different ways to approach a problem that helps them understand it. Helping them succeed is so exciting!

I recently graduated from the University of Southern California with my Master's in Molecular Biology. I am currently working as a Biology Lab and Lecture Instructor. I have several years of experience as a Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, and Instructor of Biology. As a Teaching Assistant, I learned how to command a room full of students and make learning interesting and fun. As a Research Assistant I have learned how to work well with others in addition to being proactive and organized with my day-to-day responsibilities.During my time as an Instructor, I have gained valuable qualities that I plan to incorporate into my teaching career. I have learned that motivating students to learn on their own as well as in class, through reward based incentives, helps them to absorb and retain the material.I often offer students extra credit questions on previously missed exam questions. This technique allows for the student to strive for more points, allows them to fix mistakes they may have already made, and they can take a second look at the material. I believe that if you give students all of the necessary tools and encourage them, success is sure to follow. As an undergraduate student, I participated in the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program. As a graduate student, I participated in the Genomics Graduate Scholars Program. These organizations have bettered me as a Scientist and given me the insight that encouragement and education are necessary and should be open to all groups. My unique background and teaching style shows that I am hard working and dedicated to not only learning new and interesting things, but to share them with others.
