I am a PhD student in Chemistry at the University of Windsor. I did both my Undergraduate and Master's degree in Chemistry at the University of Windsor as well. I also did a year and a half of course/research work at Cornell University. I was born in metro-Detroit and spent much of my childhood in a rural north-central Kansas before returning to the Detroit area for high school.I graduated from University of Detroit Mercy with a biology degree and a minor in English literature. In college, I tutored biology, general chemistry and English and worked for three years as a teaching assistant helping students with biology, anatomy and physiology. It was through these experiences that I found I was passionate about teaching, and through my English coursework I found I was passionate about research.Upon graduation, I worked in clinical research in a private rheumatology practice, where my team worked on ground-breaking clinical drug trials and ultimately delivered new, efficacious therapies to patients suffering with rheumatic disease.Today, I work in research in complex congenital heart disease and pediatric cardiac surgery at C.S Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. My job involves applying the scientific knowledge gained in the classroom toward discovering new ways to improve clinical outcomes for children who have had congenital heart surgery. I will be applying to medical school in summer 2021.I'm passionate about the subjects I teach. I've witnessed how the lessons learned in the classroom can be transformative to your life and the lives of others. I even taught high school mathematics for a year prior to that.When I am teaching or tutoring a student, I always try to abide by the motto: "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." This motto has helped me focus on being a good listener, which I believe has made me a very effective instructor/tutor. When a student says that he/she does not understand a concept, I will often ask him/her a couple follow-up questions in an effort to identify the root cause of his/her misconception. Then the student and I can go to work on clearing up this misconception. In general, my goal is to help students first understand WHY certain mathematical principles work, because then it will be easier for them to learn HOW to apply them appropriately.

I started at an entry level job and held a senior management position when I retired. I have experiences in full ranges of accounting functions and business operation. Among all those experiences I appreciate the most is the opportunities to coach and mentor my staff. This led me to pursue a teaching position at a community college where I taught financial accounting for a semester. Even though I was working full-time at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very fulfilling.I also have taught at Chinese school when my children were young. Teaching my American born children Chinese also provided me with special understandings on learning Chinese as a foreigner. (Yes, I consider my children foreigners.)
