Students should be passionate about the work they do, yet too many feel like they're being pushed through the wringer for no reason. Acting as the sole instructor of beginner and intermediate German courses, I learned how to lead classes of twenty-five language learners and guide them through hands-on activities emphasizing listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills. Besides the rudimentary tasks affiliated with instructing, teaching is about having patience for students who need more time to grasp particular concepts, while providing a caring and supporting atmosphere where they may blossom. Now, with a few years of teaching under my belt, I have developed a more defined teaching philosophy. Since having established clear teaching objectives through an emphasis on diversity, by providing an atmosphere of comfort and leaving students with a desire to continue learning, I learned to apply this approach to a variety of subjects including English, American and European History, as well as ESL programs and test prep. My goal by the end of each semester is to witness a growth in each students’ speaking ability and cultural conception of German-speaking countries. Working with college students and witnessing their enthusiasm for language study, generated an insatiable desire in me to continue teaching a foreign language. Just as learning a language is a never-ending process, learning to tutor a language follows suit. This job is most rewarding, as language opens the door to communication between cultures.

I have been tutoring and teaching for 9+ years. I have worked with students from many different age groups, races, religions, and creeds. All of them have found success in their academic coursework as a result of my tutelage. My expertise includes Mathematics (Basic Math through Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations), English, Test Preparation (ACT, SAT, GRE, etc.), and Professional Training (public speaking, report and proposal writing, and other career services). My primary area of expertise, though, is in challenging my students to THINK! I have found, from both practical and research perspectives, that students are better served by THINKING, as opposed to memorizing and regurgitating. I encourage students to think in complex and uncharted ways, and this makes all the difference in their future success.

I am a freshman at the University of Maryland working towards my bachelor's degree in Psychology. I tutor English (for the ACT, for APs, writing, and the general subject), math (pre-algebra, algebra, and ACT math), psychology, social sciences, and Hebrew. My favorite subject to tutor is psychology because I love the subject! As a tutor, I aspire to make sure my student truly understands the material, rather than just knows how to answer the question. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy reading, walking, and hanging out with friends (and my dog).

I am a graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering. I am currently working towards a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at the New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering. I currently work at a Tutorial Center as a New York Regents Exam tutor for subjects in mathematics (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Geometry) and science (Biology, Chemistry). Since I am passionate about all subjects of mathematics, I am comfortable with teaching from elementary school-level math to undergraduate college-level math, such as Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. However, I am most passionate about teaching SAT Math, as well as the SAT subject Math 1 and Math 2, because I enjoy the diverse mathematic topics tested in the SAT. I believe that there are several key components that every tutor should keep in mind: repetition, patience, and encouragement. Students need various examples to fully comprehend a concept. A tutor should be even-tempered when students struggle to learn a concept, and offer occasional encouragement to promote a nurturing learning environment.

Back in high school, my first ever job was getting my peers to pay me for tutoring, public speaking training, and college application help. My business started slow, but people started taking me up on my offer since it was cheaper to hire me than most professionals. I loved being able to use the skills I had worked so hard to develop myself in order to help others achieve their goals. In the years since, I have built multiple businesses, worked as a tech developer, and spoken around the country. Through it all, I never stopped taking what I have learned and spreading the knowledge to others. Now, I have nearly five years of experience tutoring and mentoring students in subjects such as algorithms, object-oriented programming, computer systems, advanced calculus, applied statistics, leadership, public speaking, a variety of business courses, and more. Anything I teach is always catered toward your goals and values so that you can truly see the value of the material.I am currently at University of Maryland researching data structures and financial technologies. I am also working on two degrees - one in computer science and the other in finance w/ minor in statistics."Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel."-Socrates

Tutoring and helping students with understanding mathematics is similar to walking in unknown territory. I love being a guide into mathematics and providing tools and thought process that resolves a conflict of understanding a particular point. I hope my enthusiasm for Mathematics will be slightly contagious and students will learn the concepts in mathematics. There are a multitude of different methods to learn, explanations to hear or read exist in the world today. At first hand, Information is complicated and sometimes looks unattainable. It is not always easy to find the correct method or just the right explanation at once in order to solve a problem or understand the concept. It takes some practice to utilize all the tools and your own strength and weakness and it is easier to accomplish it when someone knows how to guide your in the right direction.Any high school and beginner college level courses would fall into my expertise field for tutoring; Algebra courses, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Calculus. I love art and sports and consequently can utilize the knowledge I have attained about both to create bridges from concepts students are familiar to more abstract ideas in mathematics. Understanding that there are multitude of applications in everyday world of mathematics provides me with a unique set of expertise and understanding of the necessity to learn the skills for 21st century. Different methods work for different humans beings some prefer a visual, auditory or kinesthetic way to memorize a concept. Graphing and utilizing problem solving rather than memorization provides a better fundamentals for understanding a concept. At the same time, I am familiar with tools that help memorize and study independently and can recommend them if they are necessary.Within education field, I have assisted with management and monitoring various programs, used of different instructional models, Collaborative learning, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) to create engaging and balanced experiences for students K-12, and reviewed different books to create fun activities for students. In concurrence, I have utilized Google Docs, OneNote and Canva tools available for green record keeping, fact-checking, documentation, preparation of tables and charts, creation of worksheets, notes, and slides for presentation. Working with students and parent at different organizations, I continue to promote and practice high standards in learning and teaching. Utilizing Question and answer format I help each student with individual work of learning a material at hand, at the same time remembering that all education could fun and exciting. My own education and courses that helped me are listed below.Education, Honors, and CertificationsM.S.E. It is a challenge to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge (Albert Einstein) in all students, no matter of their cultural background, social-economical background, and number of other variables that influence persons growth. I want all my students to feel capable of doing mathematics. My challenge as a teacher is to create an atmosphere in the class that would encourage student to think creatively, find their strengths and weaknesses. Education only occurs when teacher and students are cooperating and learning from one another. It is important to remember that as a teacher to continue learning from students, parents and professional sources.

I am a junior Bioengineering major at the University of Maryland College Park campus and graduated from Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, NJ. I have tutored part-time extensively over the past few years, starting with mathematics for elementary and middle school students at the Brick Avon Academy in Newark, NJ, and since then have worked privately with students on a variety of subjects. I am proficient in a wide range of subjects primarily centered on the biological sciences and mathematics. With that said, my favorite subject to tutor for is test preparations for the ACT and SAT as although the exams are rigorous, there is a definite method for learning to take the tests and improving performance. Helping students through these stressful exams is highly rewarding as there is a very tangible benefit from proper studying for these tests and seeing my students excel is something that I strive for. I have found the best way to teach in a one on one environment is to connect with my students and through personalized attention find out where their strengths and weaknesses lie, then to work with them to build a foundation around their weak areas to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the subject material. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy an active lifestyle; through high school I was a sprinter on the track team, played for our varsity soccer club, and even played club rugby for two years. Since then I resigned to less demanding sports due to time commitments but still play for intramural teams at my college as well as taking time out to hike or kayak with friends as often as I can.
